About the qualification

This Level 3 Award in Counter-Terrorism Protective Security and Preparedness is a UK-regulated qualification developed in partnership with Counter Terrorism Policing and the National Counter-Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO). It is designed to give candidates the knowledge and practical understanding needed to strengthen protective security, assess risk, and improve preparedness within their organisation.

The course focuses on how terrorist threats present in real environments, how to identify vulnerabilities, and what proportionate measures can be put in place to reduce risk. It also supports organisations preparing for the requirements of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 (Martyn’s Law).

Qualification Objectives

The aim of this qualification is to provide candidates with a clear understanding of terrorist threats and how to manage them in a practical, proportionate way.

Candidates will learn how to:

  • Understand common attack methods
  • Assess the likelihood and potential impact of threats
  • Identify vulnerabilities within a venue or organisation
  • Apply appropriate protective security measures
  • Support planning and preparedness for incidents

The course also helps candidates recognise the limits of their role and understand when to seek advice from specialist professionals.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, candidates should be able to complete written assignments and participate in discussions throughout the course.

How will you be assessed?

This qualification is assessed on a pass or fail basis.

  • Written assignment
  • Professional discussion


What is a level 3 qualification

Level 3 is broadly equivalent to A-level standard. It sits above basic awareness and focuses on developing a deeper understanding of the subject.

Candidates are expected to apply what they learn, take part in discussions, and complete written assessments as part of the course.
