The biggest changes effect the requirements governing first aid courses themselves. The existing four day ‘First Aid at Work’ course is being cut to three days with a revised syllabus and lesson plans.
The HSE have also sent out a strong message against relying on outdated certification; distant memory of lessons learned could be disastrous if an accident occurs.
For the first time the HSE has acknowledged that smaller workplaces may only need basic first aid knowledge. As a result a newly designed one-day course has been brought in together with provisions recommending a short annual refresher to keep skills and knowledge up to date.
Effective first aid is the first link in the chain of survival and can be the difference between life and death.
